The in-house app… – the best tools for starting a business

A modern startup needs the right tools to be able to work efficiently, both analogue and digitally. Whether it's about communication within the team, organization or publishing your own content, the right apps are essential for founders. Our overview shows you the most important tools for startups, some free apps, and explains how to use them so that you can get the most out of your digital options.

Zoom – digital meetings made easy

Hardly any other app has had such an impact on the pandemic as Zoom. The conditions of competitors such as Skype or Hangouts were significantly better, but Zoom has now become synonymous with video meetings.

The advantage of Zoom meetings? Participants do not need to register, but can simply click on a created link. There are also many admin functions and meetings can also be recorded. Although Zoom recommends downloading its own app, users can also participate in the browser (if they reject the pop-up windows). Without an account, login and with an optional download, the barriers to entry for Zoom are low, so there's no reason why the application is so popular. But there is a catch: In the free basic version, meetings with three or more participants are limited to 40 minutes. However, the Pro version is not only worthwhile for longer meetings, it also allows companies to create their own branding.

With Typeform you know what moves your customers

Typeform is a simple application that requires no download and is free to use. In the web application you create simple questionnaires that you can then send to customers via a link. You can ask ten questions and evaluate up to 100 sheets for free, and you can also choose from different pre-made designs. All of this works quickly, easily and intuitively. All you need to do is register on the site. So if you're looking for feedback for an app, a new feature, an optimized design or a newly launched service, Typeform offers you insights into the thoughts of your customers.

Web design based on the modular principle – WordPress

WordPress is the most widely used content management system in the world - with a market share of 39% (competitors such as Squarespace or Wix are under 2%) of all websites worldwide. WordPress is not only free in the basic version, but also offers many optional plug-ins so that you can put together your own site using the modular principle. The ready-made themes allow you to create a beautiful website with just a few clicks. And because you have all the data in your own hands in this CMS, you can enter the new content immediately. WordPress is not only suitable for blogs and company websites, but also for e-commerce. You don't need a download to create your website, just a user account.

More flexibility in collaboration with Asana

Named after the positions in yoga, Asana is an application that makes it easier for you and your team to collaborate seamlessly. Since the app is available for download on all common platforms, you and your team can easily switch between devices and still be clear about who is currently working on which task. Goals and milestones can be named, Asana helps with time management and ensures that your team can achieve their full potential. And the best part? You work for free with up to 15 members. For most startups, this project management solution does not even incur any costs shortly after founding.

Trello – the alternative to Asana

Another, also free, project management tool is Trello. As with Asana, there is a premium version, but for many entrepreneurs the basic version should be sufficient. Trello impresses above all with its visual interface and can also be synchronized between smartphones, tablets, PCs and Macs, so that you can continue working barrier-free anytime, anywhere. While Asana is specifically designed for teams, Trello is also a great tool for founders who want to work better in a self-organized way. Tasks can be easily assigned for working in teams. All you need to do is download and register.

With Feedly you keep track of everything

If you would like to compile your news without being distracted, Feedly is the right app for you. The cloud service requires your own account or a Google login, but Leo also offers you an AI-based service that customizes the messages. This means that you primarily see the news that really helps your team. With Feedly you can find your way around the internet more quickly and receive the most important news from bloggers, Twitter or of course the biggest news sites in the world. And all of this in one clear feed. A free download is available on PC and Mac as well as on iOS and Android, and the optional premium version also offers features such as SSL encryption.

Slack sorts and groups your communication

Slack is exactly the right messenger for teams and startups because the download is not only free for small teams, but also scales with their needs. For the full range of functions, we recommend downloading the Pro version, because not only do you have the entire communication history saved, but you can also host video calls with up to 15 members or (at enterprise level) set up a network for up to 500,000 users. Slack is therefore ideal for companies of all sizes. You can also significantly optimize your corporate communications by downloading the basic version. Because the division into projects, teams and channels ensures that all messages reach the right people. Of course, data can also be sent easily and apps such as Google Sheets, Asana or OneDrive can be integrated into the conversation. Slack can serve as a neuralgic hub for your company.

The perfect workflow is just a download away

Founders know how important it is to be able to act quickly and efficiently and to remain productive even in stressful situations. This not only requires the right mindset, but also the right toolset. Our list of apps and web applications gives you a good overview of the apps you need for a successful start into the startup scene.
